Summary
Cellular femtocells were the most hyped device talked about by wireless operators and manufacturers in 2008, but just how much represents real potential and how much is pure hype? This analyst PowerPoint presentation takes a deep look at the potential and challenges facing femtocells in the US market. Why do operators want them? Why do consumers want them and why would they not want them? In addition, this presentation includes survey results on the benefits of femtocells conducted in the US in June of 2008, and a worldwide femtocell forecast to 2012.

Summary
Cellular infrastructure contract awards in the third quarter of 2008 were weak. After a strong 1Q and a weaker 2Q, contract awards for the third quarter are the lowest they have been since 4Q07, and 4Q of this year isn't expected to be much better.

This report contains all publicly available cellular infrastructure contract awards for the third quarter of 2008. Awards are listed by date, equipment vendor, technology, and region, and the report also contains historical award totals dating back to 2001.

Summary
4G technologies are formally those that will meet the ITU's IMT-Advanced requirements. The two technologies that are expected to meet these requirements include LTE Advanced and 802.16m WiMAX. 4G technologies are extensions of what we are just beginning to see today in mobile WiMAX and in LTE.

With 802.16e WiMAX deployments already launched worldwide, LTE proponents have jumped up their efforts to speed up development, so they are not left behind. Overall, In-Stat expects that mobile WiMAX will ultimately outpace LTE over the forecast period, due to timing of network roll-outs. Mobile WiMAX effectively came on the scene in 2006 with South Korea's WiBro. Comparatively, the earliest commercial LTE deployment will be 2009. Japan's NTT DoCoMo is expected to begin its commercial services in the late 2009/2010 timeframe.

In-Stat expects that mobile WiMAX and LTE subscriptions will represent only a miniscule portion of the total 2G/3G/4G subscriptions over the next five years. Even in 2013, In-Stat expects that GSM/GPRS/EDGE will account for nearly 2.8 billion subscriptions, representing more than 55 percent of the total 4.8 billion 2G/3G/4G subscriptions expected in 2013.

Summary
The second quarter of 2008 did not turn out to be a bad one for cellular contract awards. In 2Q08, infrastructure contact awards with reported values totaled almost $3 billion dollars, which compares with $2.6 billon dollars last quarter, and $3.6 billon for 2Q last year. Looking back at 2006 and 2005, their second quarter contract awards only totaled $876 million and $1.2 billion respectively.

Summary
This year, semiconductor content in cellular and WiMAX infrastructure radio devices will total approximately $17 billion dollars, with currently most of the semiconductors being used in macro base stations for cellular, but that will change. WiMAX and cellular broadband technologies like WCDMA are being deployed at increasingly high frequencies due to availability, and the use of these higher frequencies is making it more difficult for operators to provide adequate indoor coverage for their subscribers. Furthermore, 3G technologies and WiMAX require a strong signal level to provide the fastest data speeds and that also is difficult for operators to achieve.

This report contains the semiconductor content forecasts for femtocells, enterprise picocells, picocells, microcells, macrocells, and mobile WiMAX base stations from the present through 2012. In addition to semiconductor revenues, this report also contains the unit forecasts for cellular base stations and the sector forecast for mobile WiMAX base stations.

Summary
Cellular subscriptions (contracts, not individuals) continue to grow at a fast rate, but that rate is beginning to slow worldwide. Still some regions and countries are bucking the trend. In addition to subscription growth, the mix of technologies used in each region is rapidly changing. For example, in Western Europe, the number of new subscribers using WCDMA and HSPA technology is quite impressive.

Subscriptions are being fueled by incredible growth in India, China, and Africa, but the growth in developed countries is definitely leveling out. When the world is viewed as a whole, the growth in developing areas is what stands out as driving the worldwide total. When all is taken together, the number of subscriptions in 2007 grew by 667.6 million over 2006, but 2008 is forecast to only grow by 382.5 million over 2007. Some of the slowing is caused by saturation in some areas, but another aspect is the relatively sluggish world economy. By 2012, the yearly growth in subscribers is expected to decrease to only 163 million per year, roughly twice the population increase projected in that year.

This report contains cellular subscription numbers by region and technology for 2006 and 2007, and contains forecast information through 2012.

Cellular infrastructure contract awards in the first quarter of 2008 were very strong overall—in fact the strongest they have been in a first quarter for 7 years. As for manufacturers, Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia-Siemens, and Ericsson all had a good first quarter, while some of the other manufacturers floundered. This report contains a summation of all reported cellular infrastructure contract awards for 1Q08. Awards are listed by manufacturer, country, technology, and award amount. In addition, a summary of award totals for the last seven years are included. Companies that are mentioned in this report include Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei, Motorola, Nokia-Siemens, and ZTE.
