Summary
Wi-Fi’s popularity in mobile PCs and home networks has not guaranteed its success in consumer electronics (CE). Many issues plagued early products with Wi-Fi including lack of consumer awareness, ease-of-use, battery life, throughput and range limitations, and high cost. Most of these concerns have now been addressed, and the cost of embedding Wi-Fi into devices has decreased significantly. Furthermore, the finalization of IEEE 802.11n in late 2009 will remedy the technical issues associated with 802.11b/g, which limited the integration of Wi-Fi into devices with more complex applications like video.

Because of its large installed base in mobile PCs and home networks, Wi-Fi deserves strong consideration as a solution to bring content into the living room, even as a companion technology. Its broad flexibility and utility, as well as its large and mature ecosystem, make Wi-Fi a valued, “Swiss army knife” technology for the CE market.

This report covers the global market for CE devices with Wi-Fi for 20 different applications within 7 device categories: home aggregators, external clients, mobile PCs, stationary CE, PC peripherals, portable CE, and handsets. The report provides annual shipment forecasts for the total available market, as well as the penetration of Wi-Fi, for each device through 2012. It also includes a brief discussion of 802.11n, WPAN, and competing wireless technologies.

Summary
Wi-Fi and hotspots have become commonplace; however, resistance to paying for access remains high. Over the last 12 months hotspot operators have gone through some profound changes to survive in a market where demand increases while willingness to pay for the service decreases.

In-Stat's 2008 hotspot market includes the following:
 End-user data on how and where the service is used.
 End-user data around willingness to pay for hotspot services.
 Supply-side analysis on how operators are changing their business strategies.
 Global forecasts for hotspot venues and access revenues.

Summary
Wi-Fi mobile convergence made a strong showing this year at CTIA. In the past, carriers believed Wi-Fi would marginalize cellular and often deactivated the 802.11 technologies in their handsets.

Although cellular/Wi-Fi handsets have been available for the past several years, the segment got a strong boost in 2007, when Apple launched the iPhone. With an innovative touch screen that allows the user to view Web pages with the tap of a finger, the iPhone raised the bar for device usability, functionality, and design.

Discussions with vendors at CTIA indicate that Wi-Fi is clearly becoming a complementary function to cellular. Devices that support both cellular and Wi-Fi promise to leverage licensed and unlicensed spectrum to deliver the best possible customer experience at the lowest cost.

Summary
In 4Q07, worldwide Wi-Fi revenue increased by 6% Year-over-Year (YoY), from $1.0 billion in 4Q06. Following a strong 3Q07, quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) revenue was up by 1%. Total worldwide shipments exceeded 16 million.

Draft-n shipments during 4Q07 continued to show the strongest growth. Draft-n access points (AP) unit shipments showed a QoQ growth of 30% and a YoY growth of 340%. Typically, 4Q is a slow quarter for enterprise and 4Q07 was no exception. Both shipments of multi-mode APs and network interface cards (NIC) decreased. Fueled by the growth of draft-n and the continued strong shipments of 802.11g, NICs increased for the second straight quarter during 4Q07.

For the first time since In-Stat has started tracking WLAN market share NETGEAR led in overall Wi-Fi unit shipments taking the lead away from Linksys during 4Q07.

This report examines the WLAN market for 4Q07. Market shares for enterprise and SOHO/consumer vendors are provided, based on unit shipments and manufacturers' revenue for the quarter. The data is segmented by air standard and equipment form factor.
